(Red) Light Therapy

(Red) Light Therapy

arunalight

Arunalight® is an innovative LED-based eye therapy system built into a lightweight pair of glasses intended for home use. It has features designed to improve blood flow and circulation to the eyes (both anterior and posterior).

Unlike sunlight, red light therapy is safe and does not contain harmful UV radiation, which can cause skin aging, sunburn, and cancer. Arunalight delivers red light at a wavelength of 670nm to the eyes and surrounding skin in a targeted and controlled manner.  It is recommended for only 3 minutes of use every other day. The Arunalight comes with a convenient travel case and charger. It is Health Canada Approved and available for special order thru the eycare office of Dr. Jeff Sciberras.

We list some of the benefits and applications of our photobiomodulation device below:

Sustained Mitochondrial Health
Regular PBM therapy can maintain mitochondrial function and reduce oxidative damage over the long term, potentially preventing the progression of retinal degenerative diseases (Eells et al., 2008).
Reduced Inflammation and Cell Death
Ongoing PBM treatments can continually suppress inflammatory responses and reduce apoptosis in retinal cells, preserving visual function (Albarracin et al., 2011).
Improved Visual Acuity and Retinal Structure
Long-term PBM may lead to sustained improvements in visual acuity and retinal structure, especially in conditions like diabetic retinopathy and AMD, by enhancing cell survival and function (Tang et al., 2014).

There is clinical evidence for PBM Treatment of the Eye:

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD):
Improved visual acuity and contrast sensitivity
Reduced drusen volume
Diabetic Retinopathy:
Reduced macular edema
Improved visual acuity
Glaucoma:
Improved retinal nerve fiber layer thickness
Reduced intraocular pressure
Dry Eye Syndrome:
Increased tear production
Improved meibomian gland function
Retinitis Pigmentosa:
Slowed progression of visual field loss
Improved electroretinogram responses
Ocular Inflammation:
Reduced inflammation in uveitis and other inflammatory conditions
Corneal Healing:
Accelerated corneal wound healing
Reduced corneal inflammation
Neuroprotection:
Enhanced mitochondrial function in retinal cells
Reduced oxidative stress
Optic Nerve Disorders:
Improved visual function in traumatic optic neuropathy
Potential benefits in Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy
Circadian Rhythm Regulation:
Potential to regulate circadian rhythms through non-visual photoreceptors.
Myopia Control:
Potential to slow myopia progression in recent studies and human case presentations.

Below are the Contraindications for Ocular PBM:

Active ocular malignancy
Photosensitivity disorders
Recent use of photosensitizing medications
Pregnancy (lack of sufficient safety data)
Active ocular infections
Recent retinal surgery
Severe thyroid eye disease
