A Canadian Dry Eye Company Highlight

Montreal-based Candorvision, a division of Candorpharm Inc., is based out of Montreal and develops high-quality ophthalmic medications and medical devices. Patient safety and product tolerability are paramount to the founder’s mission.

Candorvision was founded in 2012 by Dr. Frank Heidemann, a German-Canadian pharmacist. He moved to Montreal to establish Candorpharm with the aim of making proven European pharmaceuticals and medical devices available to Canadians.

They purposely eliminate potentially harmful excipients like preservatives and phosphates from eye drops and ointments, using only the highest quality ingredients. The bottles employed utilize a patented German-engineered application in the form of an airless, multi-dose container system. Sterility is guaranteed during storage and for six months after first use.

Candorvision’s products are developed with environmental friendliness in mind and minimally impactful production techniques wherever possible.

Following the most stringent national and international standards for quality, their German manufacturing partners employ modern production lines. Candorvision’s motto is: “Your eyes are everything!” I could not agree more.

When you experience symptoms of dry eye, burning or itching, these are symptoms often caused by hypersensitivities to environmental elements (i.e. allergies). Dr. Sciberras recommends using Hylo-Dual, especially in children due to its non-sting application and preservative-free formula, resulting in high tolerance and compliance. This unique product has the following features:

  • Offers immediate comfort (no stinging upon application), moisturizes and protects your eyes from dryness and irritation for an extended duration
  • Protects the eyes against rapid tear evaporation by stabilizing the lipid layer of the tear film (emulgator and lipid-free)
  • Relieves inflammatory and allergy symptoms of itching and burning
  • Both preservative and phosphate-free
  • Remains sterile and viable for 6 months after opening

Hylo-Dual contains Sodium Hyaluronate and Ectoine. The latter ingredient is a natural substance formed by microorganisms to protect themselves in extreme environments (e.g. osmotic stress in salt lakes or geysers). Ectoine helps water to  bind with ocular surface cells, forming a physiological barrier against allergens, such as pollen, dust, and dander. Furthermore, Ectoine stabilizes the lipid layer of the tear film. The combination of Sodium Hyaluronate and Ectoine provides intensive, long-lasting lubrication of the ocular surface and protects against tear film evaporation. When tears evaporate prior to your next blink, corneal nerves become irritated, creating the sensation of grittiness or burning. Hylo-Dual relieves itching and burning, the typical symptoms of environmentally-triggered inflammations secondary to allergy. With the Hylo family of products, eye care professionals and their patients now have access to a range of truly preservative and phosphate-free treatment options that can be safely and confidently used for up to six months after first application.

When you experience symptoms of dry eye, or after having eye surgery or corneal abrasion, artificial tears are often employed, but for more severe cases or when the eyes do not close completely at night (known as nocturnal lagophthalmos) or in cases of Floppy Eyelid Syndrome, an ointment may be required for overnight coverage. Candorvision’s answer to that is Ocunox:

  • Ocunox is Canada’s only eye ointment with retinol palmitate (vitamin A)
  • Improves the tear film and protects the surface of the eye
  • Prevents tears from evaporating while you sleep
  • Is preservative and phosphate free
  • Can also be used for 6 months after opening

Ocunox contains Vitamin A, a natural component of the tear film, that supports tolerance and helps ensure that the ointment mixes well with available tears to relieve the burning sensation of dry or tired eyes. Ocunox helps the eyelids slide easily over the surface of the cornea and conjunctiva, keeping the eyelids smooth and preventing crusting around the eye. It may also be useful in treating periocular eczema.

When you experience symptoms of dry eye or burning, itching, strained eye-lids or foreign body sensation your doctor may recommend using Calmo Eye Spray.

  •  Stabilizes the lipid layer of the tear film when sprayed on the closed
  • Offers immediate comfort by regulating and improving the humidification of the eye surface and the eyelids
  • Contains liposomes and dexpanthenol (pro-vitamin B5), which moisturizes the eye area and provides preventative skin protection
  • Makes wearing contact lenses more comfortable
  • Is preservative free
  • Can be used for 6 months after first use

Calmo Eye Spray addresses one of the root causes of dry eye – tear film evaporation. The liposomes in Calmo Eye Spray consist of lipids very similar to those which occur in the human tear film. The lipid layer’s function is two-fold: to slow the tears from evaporating and prevent them from running over the lid margin (a condition known as epiphora). Insufficient or poor quality lipids will result in dry eye (often caused by meibomian gland dysfunction). Once sprayed upon the closed eyes, the lipids in Calmo Eye Spray mix with naturally occurring lipids produced by the eyelids’ meibomian glands, located at the lid margin. Upon opening the eye, this optimized lipid mix gets spread onto the tear film helping to stabilize the tear film. The lipid layer of the tear film is very thin, so only a small amount of Calmo Eye Spray is sufficient to repair and stabilize that lipid layer. After only a few minutes, the unpleasant sensations like burning, itching and gritty sensation (like sand in your eyes) is reduced. With every subsequent blink, the tear film on the eye surface will once more be supplied with this mix of physiological lipids and liposomes. The effect of 1 or 2 sprays often works for up to 4 hours.
